Greece moved one month closer toward reaching an operating budget surplus for the year—potentially its first in more than a decade and a development that could help the government's make its case for further debt relief.
Finance ministry data Tuesday showed a primary surplus for the state budget of €2.9 billion ($3.8 billion) for the eight months to August, compared with a €1.4 billion deficit a year earlier. That is well above targets set in the country's latest international bailout, which had forecast a €2.5 billion deficit for this point in the year.
